Can I be Trusted?
Written by Sarah Ann E.
Ask yourself this question “Can I be trusted?” You may say, “Sure! When someone gives me a task to do, I get it done. Sure, I can be trusted.” Well, before you get too confident that you can be trusted, read this article and then answer that same question at the end.
Proverbs 31:11-12 says, “The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.” Let us focus on the first phrase of the verse, “The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her.” I know, your first response is, “I don’t have a husband, so this doesn’t apply to me at all.” Read that verse again. She will do him good . . . when? . . . just when she is married? NO, it says ALL the DAYS of her life.
To be trustworthy means to be reliable or responsible in every way. A trustworthy person is worthy of others’ trust and belief. This does not just mean in the area of our tasks or chores. I am going to step on all of our toes, including mine, and say that the biggest area that we as single ladies need to work on is our thoughts. Yes, we need to be trustworthy to our future husband in our thoughts. All of us struggle with wrong thoughts. Do you think about this guy and then that guy? Are you always eyeing one guy and then daydreaming about him all day long? Do you bounce from a crush on one guy to a crush on another guy? Do you think those kinds of thoughts are preparing you to be faithful to ONE MAN in the future. NO WAY. In fact, those thoughts may lead you to divorce your mate. Does that scare you or not? It should. Wrong thoughts towards a guy, or even just thinking about guys more than anything else is wrong. This is displeasing to the Lord. The verse that always convicts me about this is Galatians 5:13 “. . .do not turn your freedom onto an opportunity for the flesh. . . ” No one knows what you think, but do not let this freedom turn into fleshly, worldly thinking. Psalms 94:11a says, “The LORD knows the thoughts of man.” Our Lord will hold us accountable for our. “We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ” 2 Corinthians 10:5. We MUST captivate our thoughts and beg our Lord to help us to think thoughts that are after Him. And just remember, our thoughts do come out as actions and words sooner or later. Thinking right thoughts is the biggest thing that we can do now to be trustworthy to our future husbands.
Another way that we can be trustworthy is the way we treat men. We MUST be discreet with men. Do not try to gain attention from them either by your actions, words, or dress. This will cause ungodly guys to lust, and even godly guys to struggle with their thoughts. This is not the way that we will attract godly husbands, and you may even turn a godly man away by those wrong actions. We must have a humble, quiet attitude about us. “A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submission” 1 Timothy 2:11. And in 1 Peter 3 it talks about the attitudes and actions that a wife must have. “Wives, be submissive to your own husbands.” “Your adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.” WOW! Our Lord even says that a gentle and quiet spirit in a lady is precious to Him. Do we possess that gentleness, or are at least striving to do so.
There are so many other ways that we can be a trustworthy virtuous woman, but I have pick out the ones that I know are the biggest struggles for me.
Now, go back to our article’s question, “Can I be trusted?” I know that if we are all honest, our answer would be NO. There are so many things that each of us need to really work on. With our Lord’s help and strength, let us strive to be trustworthy women.
