Jesus came to earth, born of a virgin. Yet, what was He born to be? He was not born to be the miracle healer, who healed many people of their diseases and raised people from the dead. He was not born to preach to the people of Himself. He was born to die on the cross to bear the punishment of our sins. Romans 3:23 tells us, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” We are all sinners, so Christ had to die for all of our sins. I Peter 2:24 states, “He Himself bore our sins in His own body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds we were healed.” He died so that we could have eternal life with Him in heaven when we die. Most of us could probably quote John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” This verse tells us that whoever believes in Jesus will have eternal life. Yet, what are we to believe? We are to believe that we are sinners, deserving great punishment, and that Jesus died on the cross to pay that punishment of our sin. “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; And that He was buried, and that He was raised again the third day according to the Scriptures” (I Corinthians 15:3b-4). This verse gives us blessed news that Jesus rose again. He did not stay dead. He rose again after being dead three days and after appearing to many here on earth in His resurrected body, He ascended back to heaven (Acts 1:9). In John 3:18 Jesus says, “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” Then later in verse 36 John says, “He who believes in the Son has eternal life: and he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” The choice is left up to us whether to believe or not. The Lord does not force us to believe in Him. This is the gift He offers to you, His free gift of eternal life at the cost of Jesus’ suffering and death for the payment of our sins. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). This is a personal choice each person has to make. Just because your parents have believed in Jesus’ death to cover their sins and have accepted Christ as their Saviour, doesn’t mean that you are “saved” too. We each have to make that choice all on our own.
When I was a young child I was confronted with my sin and the need of a Saviour. I was born a night owl, and I have always loved to be out of bed late. One night I was found out of bed when my parents had already put me to bed for the night. I think I was playing with my little sister who was in a crib. My father took me to his room and disciplined me for disobeying in getting out of bed. For some reason I asked my dad why my little sister didn’t get saved. My sister at that time was about 2 years old. He in turn told me that I was older and needed to be saved first and then he explained my need to be saved by sharing some verses with me, most of which I have just shared with you. Then I saw that I was a sinner and in need of Jesus to save me from my sins. I knelt down by my parent’s bed that night and asked the Lord to forgive me of my sins and be my Saviour. The first memory that I have after that occasion was calling my grandparents on the phone and telling them that I was saved. I was so excited about it. Even though I was a young age and I didn’t fully understand salvation, I had accepted the Lord as my Saviour and He was my Master! I very excitedly shared with others that I was His child, even the pastor of my church!
Some of us have been forgiven of many sins. The more sin our Lord has forgiven, the more we are grateful, and in turn, the more we will love Him. Jesus said of the woman who anointed His feet with the perfume from the alabaster box, "For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little loves little" (Luke 7:47). I can truly say that I love my Lord much for the sins that He has forgiven in my life. Even though I was saved at a young age, especially as a teenager, I went through a rebellious stage and the Lord has forgiven me of those sins too. Ladies, what a blessed Saviour we have!!!
