In 1 Thessalonians 5:18 we read “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” but how often do we really give thanks and express gratitude? I think too often we are like the ten lepers that Jesus healed where only one came back and gave thanks. We often come with our requests before God but how often do we truly give thanks, and I don’t just mean saying ‘thank you for this and thank you for that’ without really meaning it or thinking about what we are saying but I mean real genuine gratitude for what God has done in our lives or for blessings He has given us.

I have recently started a habit of a gratitude journal. It is not a prayer but it does help me “be thankful in all circumstances” and forces me to think about those things that I am grateful for. I commit to writing down three things I am grateful for a day and not just ones on repeat but preferably new things every day and to be honest sometimes it can be really hard to even just get three but I force myself to think of three and I usually can come up with them with a bit of thought.

I think the reason God wants us to be thankful in all circumstances is that it also helps us practice Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.” When we are grateful we are more likely to be thinking thoughts that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, etc. 

Let us make a habit of giving thanks, whether it is keeping a gratitude journal or saying sincere prayers of gratitude and try to think of new things we can be grateful for because God really does bless us with so much.

Continuing our discussion on the names of God I came across this one which I would like to discuss today: Jehovah M’Kaddesh or The Lord Who Sanctifies and Makes Holy. The truth is we can never be saved by our own good works, if this was the case Jesus would never have had to come and die for us on the cross. We can’t add to or take away from our salvation our works, good or bad. Salvation and sanctification come through God alone.

I have seen a sad trend recently amongst some Christians where some Christians are becoming like the church in Galatia and wanting to go back to Old Testament ways of living under the law again. This isn’t going to help and Paul addresses this quite a bit in Galatians.

Remember always that it is by grace that you have been saved, not by anything you could do. All you need is faith in what Christ has already done and you will be saved and sanctified. We are told that this is so not that no man can boast. It is all too easy to classify sin and say that this sin is worse than that sin and therefore I am better than you because I only do this but you do that. By taking it off us and putting it all on God, it puts everyone on an equal footing, no matter what you have done, no matter how bad you think it is, God can still forgive you and sanctify you because He does it.

So wherever you are I encourage you to trust in Jehovah M’Kaddesh, whether you still need to come to Him and give Him your life; whether you are walking with Him daily or whether you are fighting the temptation to get caught up in law again trust in Him and He will sanctify you and make you holy.

El Shaddai

I have always loved this song. The meaning of the name El Shaddai is debated as the Shaddai can have various meanings but generally one would translate it as “God Almighty”. Enjoy the song.

Jehovah Shalom

Jehovah Shalom is the name I want to look at today. It means “The Lord is peace” or “Jehovah send peace” and is the name Gideon gave to an altar he erected in Judges 6:24.

In the world we live in today we are often presented with situations that try to steal our peace but if we put our trust in God and know that no matter what we face, He has not relinquished His control then we can know His peace in our lives.

This year has been a particularly bad year for me, I honestly never knew so much could go wrong in one year as it has this year but at the same time God has drawn me so much closer to Himself and has given me such a revelation of this peace. That no matter what I am going through I can come to Him and He will surround me with His peace.

The other day I shared Bethel Music’s “It is Well” and the part I love about that song is where it says “So let go my soul and trust in Him The waves and wind still know His name” The same Jesus who calmed the storms in the New Testament can calm the storms in my life if I will let go and trust Him.

No matter what you are going through today I encourage you to let go and trust God and let Him calm the storms in your life. Let Him be your Jehovah Shalom, the Lord, your peace. Experience His peace which goes beyond human understanding in all the situations you face in this life.

Jehovah Rapha – the Lord My Healer

The other day I covered the name Jehovah Jireh meaning The Lord, My Provider; today I want to talk about Jehovah Rapha, The Lord, My Healer. This name is taken from Exodus 15:26 where the last part says “I am the Lord who heals you.”

When Jesus came as God to earth we see He often performed miracles of healing and we are told that Matthew 8:16 says “That evening many demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. He cast out the evil spirits with a simple command, and he healed all the sick.” Isaiah also tells us that when Jesus died on the cross He took our sicknesses and removed our diseases.

Even today God is a Healer and I have seen His work of healing in my own life and the life of others. In 2007 my father had cancer and the doctors gave him a less than 10% chance of living even with an operation. They almost lost him on the operating table and to them the situation did not look good but people were praying and at that time my father was healed of cancer and there was no sign of cancer for nine years until this year again and we are trusting God to heal him again. This time the doctors have told us it is inoperable, chemo is doing nothing and so the only hope really is God and yet today my father is actually doing so well and in such good health despite the fact that the tumor is still there. We believe God is going to completely remove this too.

I also believe that God is not only our physical healer but also our emotional healer. If you are suffering emotional pain or mental illness God is also able to heal you. He made our bodies and our minds and He can restore us to perfect health.

This is my prayer for you: “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.” (3 John 1:2)

I encourage you today to listen to the video I am embedding below and really listen to the words. Many of us are struggling with different things today but let us focus on Jesus and know that He who calmed the storm 2000 years ago can still calm the storms in our lives and bring us His peace.

A Godly Woman

I read a quote on Facebook today “The mark of the godly man is that he likes to change, he says, ‘Lord, show me where I should change and I’ll do it. Show me where I should obey, even where it’s hard, and I’ll do it” (Timothy Kellar). I believe the same could be said of a godly woman.

What areas of your life are you working on? They don’t always need to be spiritual, I believe God is interested in every area of our lives. God may show us that we need to improve our diet because our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 6:19); He might show us that we need to improve the use of our time – are we being lazy or spending time on things we shouldn’t?

The godly woman is always changing and always growing. If you are not sure what areas God wants to work on in your life then I encourage you to put aside some time to actually ask him and pray the prayers mentioned in this quote by Timothy Kellar.

Personally I feel like there are so many areas I am working on that I have decided that going forward I am going to create a ‘self-improvement list’, to be honest not many of the things are what one would consider spiritual but as I say I believe God is interested in every area of my life. I want to grow and become the woman He is calling me to be. Will you join me?

How do You Clothe Yourself?

Over the past few months I have been getting very interested in wardrobe planning, capsule wardrobes, style, etc. but this is not the type of clothing I want to talk about today. You know that the Bible says quite a bit about how we are to clothe ourselves spiritually.

Ephesians 6 we are told to clothe ourselves in all God’s armour:

Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we[d] are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.[e] In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.[f] Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

We are constantly in a war against principalities and powers in the heavenly realms and in order to stand strong in our faith we need to be clothed in the full armor of God, but in relation to others we would do better to clothe ourselves as instructed in Colossians 3:

Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.”

Colossians 3 talks about what it means to have true beauty, a beautiful bride reflecting the heart of Christ; but Ephesians 6 talks about being clothed and ready for battle. As Christians we need to have both. Clothe yourself with love, humility, gentleness, mercy, forgiveness, and patience as you relate to others and clothe yourself with the full armor of God as you go into spiritual battle.

Jehovah Jireh – The Lord My Provider

I thought today I would start a bit of a series on the names of God and what they mean to us. The first one that many people know is Jehovah Jireh – The Lord My Provider. Whatever you need today, the Lord is able to provide for you.

The name Jehovah Jireh is originally used when God asks Abraham to sacrifice Isaac and he goes to do so but just at the last minute God intervenes and provides a lamb for the sacrifice in place of Isaac. Then Abraham called the place Jehovah Jireh because he said that God would provide.

In Philippians 4:19 the Bible says that ‘My God will supply all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus’. Although this book doesn’t use the name Jehovah Jireh I believe it says the same thing – that God will provide according to His glorious riches.

What does that mean? God has all the universe at His disposal so no matter what you are needing it is not beyond His ability to provide.

God’s supply extends to every area of our life, no matter what we are needing. If we need material goods or money or if we are needing healing, peace, or something else God is more than able to provide.

Does God always provide everything we want? No. Just like a parent may not give their child everything they ask for because they see a bigger picture so God knows more than we do and may see that we are wanting could actually be harmful to us. Still we can rest assured that if it is really necessary then God will provide.

Jehovah Jireh sees all your needs, He knows every situation you face and He will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches. Whatever you are needing today claim this promise from God.

Hearing God’s Voice

It always amazes me how many Christians don’t think they can hear the voice of God. If you are a born-again Christian let me tell you that God wants to speak to you and if you are willing to make time to listen then you will learn to hear His voice. He tells us in His Word that ‘My sheep know My voice.’ (John 10:27)

Firstly, I think part of the problem is that many people don’t make time to listen to God’s voice. If you really want to hear God then you need to make time to be still and shut out the voices of the world and the busyness for a while. Also don’t feel like you always need to be reading your Bible or praying to spend time in God’s presence, just be quiet and let Him speak to you instead of you always speaking to Him. God may speak to you through the Bible directly or just as a still, small voice in your heart but either way you need to make time to listen.

A crucial aspect of knowing that what you are hearing really is the voice of God is that God will NEVER go against His Word. Spend time really getting to know what the Bible has to say so that when you hear a still, small voice in your heart you can measure it against the Bible and determine whether this is from God or not. If it goes against what the Bible says then it is definitely not from God.

What do you feel about it? Generally God’s Word comes with a sense of peace although that said, sometimes His plans for us are so big that when He tells us them we may be a bit frightened and fearful.  When you feel frightened, ask yourself why? Could it be that this is from God but you feel it is beyond your abilities – then that is good because you will be more dependent on God. If there is a general uneasiness then rather don’t do anything and ask that if it is God that He would confirm the Word.

The more you spend time with God and desire to know His voice, the more you will grow in Him and get to know His voice clearer. Ask God to silence any voice that is not from Him and to open your ears to hear His voice clearly. Remember, He longs to speak with you.
